내가 처음 그 섬에 발을 디딜때는 작열 하는 태양빛으로 동백잎은 검푸르게 두꺼워져 섬을 감싸고 있던 여름이었다.
아침이면 햇살 부스러기들이 작은 포구에 쏟아져 내리고 있었다.
두 세번의 발걸음부터는 섬은 나에게 견고한 탱자나무 가시에 긁혀서 패인 쓰라린 생채기난 혈류의 흔적들을 보여 주었다.
섬은 사람들을 허용하고 지켜주었고, 사람들은 섬을 섬기고 세월을 바다로 흘려보내며 오늘까지도 그렇게 살아가고 있었다. 사는 동안 욕망들은 연기처럼 다가와서 무참히 해풍에 날아가 버려도, 곳곳에는 그리움을 꽃으로 만들어내는 사람들이 남아서 아직 다른 아침을 기다리는 밤으로 살아가고 있었다.
떠나고, 남겨진는 곳
그리고 돌아와서 다시 태어나는 곳 그 섬, 금오도
그들의 내일은 오늘로 분주하다.
When I first set foot on the island, it was summer when camellia leaves grew thick and covered the island with the scorching sunlight.
In the morning, fragment of sunlight were pouring down into the small port.
After two or three steps, the island showed me the traces of blood that had been scratched and bruised by the thorns of a strong tangerine tree.
The island allowed and protected people, and people served the island and spent their years in the sea, living like that even today. While living, desires approached like smoke and were mercilessly blown away by the sea breeze, but people who turned longing into flowers remained, living as nights waiting for another morning.
A place to leave and be left behind.
Then come back and be reborn, that island, Geumo Island

남도의 미항 여수가 넉넉하게 품고 있는 온유한 섬, 금오도(金鰲島)
그 섬에서 한 시대를 오롯이 받치며 살아온 사람들.
섬사람이면 누구 랄 것도 없이 한 많고 사연 또한 절절 했으며 눈물과 웃음, 숱 했던 세상에서의 다 난했던 삶과 이제는 하나 둘씩 이별을 준비해야하는 시기가 되었다. 그러나 그 지난 했던 시대의 삶 끝자락 에서는 또 다른 형태의 변화가 잉태되고 있다. 앞선 세대와는 단절된 전혀 다른 문명과 문화가 기다리고 있다. 어느 모진 봄날 푸진 햇살이 살포시 내릴 즈음 새 생명이 탄생하면 그 섬 의 삶과 역사는 다시 질기게 이어갈 것이다
강신호의 사진은 여기에서 출발 한다
100여년이 훨씬 넘는 섬의 역사 속에서 피고 지었던 섬사람들의 생의 흔적들이 사진 속에 잔잔히 녹아있다. 근대적 삶의 모습은 곧 삭아 무너져 내릴 듯 가까스로 버티고 있고 손때가 묻었던 살림도구와 생을 떠 받쳤던 노동의 도구들은 여지없이 닳고 삭았다. 새로운 시대가 오는 준비를 위해 스스로 삭아 소멸할 준비를 하고 있는 것이다. 이런 삶의 풍경을 사진가 강신호가 담아내는 사진적 시어는 정갈하고 단정하다. 한 치의 흐트러짐도 없는 프레임과 오브제의 적절한 배치는 모범답안을 넘어 그만의 특화된 프레임을 구사하고 있다.
앞서 금오도를 오랫동안 담아온 박성태 사진가의 사진에서는 문명과 문화의 충돌 속에서 버티며 살아왔던 섬사람들의 문화인류학적 관점에서 주제를 담아내었다.
하지만 강신호의 사진에서는 한 시대를 마감하고 새로운 시대가 도래 할 즈음, 앞선 물은 뒷물로 밀어내며 저 넓은 바다로 스며들 듯, 지나가는 시절의 씁쓸하고 안타까운 풍경을 사진적 랩소디 풍으로 담담하게 표현해내고 있다.
그리고 금오도가 빚어내는 그릴 수 없는 색을 사진적 색감으로 만들어내는 재능이 번득 거린다.오래되어 변색 되며 사라져가는 삶의 풍경에 대한 안타까움과 서러움이 사진 곳곳에 눈물 겹도 록 안타까운 메시지를 사진 기호로 대치하여 많은 것을 음미하게 만들어내는 재능이 있다. 보고 스쳐지나가는 즉발적인 이미지가 아닌, 조금은 시간적 여유를 갖고 음미하는 사진적 표현이 깊고도 융숭하다. 자연의 풍경 사진이 아닌, 삶의 풍경이기 때문에 더더욱 사진적 메시지와 의미가 서로 조화를 이루며 아름답고 깊은 슬픔이 한데 어우러지고 있다. 슬픔도 소멸도 죽음까지도 슬 프지 않게 말이다. 이렇듯 지나가고 사라지는 것에 대한 경외감을 표하고 과거가 있었기에 기억 이 있고 오늘, 우리는 다시 기억을 만들어가고 있다는 것을 강신호는 사진으로 그런 기억의 파편 을 담아 미래를 위해 복원하고 있는 것인지도 모른다.
그 섬, 금오도에 해마다 피고 시들며 지는 수많은 꽃들이 있고 날마다 불어 와 돌담을 치며 흩어 지고 다시 만나는 바람들이 산다.
단 한 번도 평온한 삶 그리움으로 피어오르지 못한 채 그들의 한 생이 저리도 저물고 있다.
그 섬, 금오도에서 안타깝게 말이다.

Geumo-do, the amiable island of Yeosu, a beautiful port in NAMDO. People who have lived on that island for an era. However, at the end of life in the past, another form of change is conceived. A completely different civilization and culture awaits, disconnected from the previous generation. On a harsh spring day, when a new life is born when the sun is spreading, the life and history of the island will continue to be tough again.
The photograph of Shin-Ho Kang starts here. The traces of the lives of the islanders, which bloomed and built in the history of the island for more than 100 years, are gently melted in the photos. The appearance of modern life has barely endured, as if it will soon crumble, and the tools of labor that supported life and the household tools that had been stained with hand were worn and burned. The island is preparing to die off on its own in preparation for the coming of a new era. The photographic poetic language that photographer Shin-Ho Kang captures this landscape of life is neat and neat. The proper arrangement of the frame and the object without any disturbance goes beyond the model answer and uses its own specialized frame. In the photograph of Sung-Tae Park, a photographer who has captured Geumo-do for a long time, the subject was captured from the cultural anthropological point of view of the islanders who had survived the conflict between civilization and culture. However, in Shin-ho Kang's photographs, when an era is over and a new era arrives, the water that precedes it is pushed out into the back water and soaks into the open sea, calmly expressing the bitter and unfortunate landscape of the passing days in a photographic rhapsody style.
In addition, he is gleaming with the talent of creating photographic colors that cannot be drawn by Geumo-do. He replaced the sad message with photographic symbols so that the sadness and sadness of the landscape of life that fades and fades out of the past may cause tears throughout the photo. He has a talent for making a lot of things to taste. It is not an instantaneous image that simply passes by looking at it, but the photographic expression that is enjoyed with a little time, is deep and sublime. Because it is not a landscape of nature, but a landscape of life, the photographic message and meaning are in harmony with each other, and the beautiful and deep sadness is harmonized together. Not sorrow, extinction, or even death. I remember the past because I expressed my awe for passing and disappearing like this. Today, that we are making memories again, Shin-Ho Kang may be restoring for the future by putting fragments of memories with photographs. On that island, Geumo-do, there are countless flowers that bloom and wither every year, and the winds blow every day, striking the stone walls, scattering and meeting again. Their life is dying from one place to another without ever rising with longing for a peaceful life.
Unfortunately on that island, Geumo-do.
